Genesis 1:29

“And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth,

and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.”

*

God created human beings and then said to them, “You see all the plants and all the fruits? They are your food. Eat and live.”

When we don’t eat, our bodies cannot function well.

We become weak and sick, and eventually we will die if we do not eat. We were created to be dependent on food.

But that dependence is not just physical. It is spiritual.

*

When God gave food to Adam and Eve, it was not just about calories. It was about relationship.

Every time they ate, they were supposed to remember: “I am alive because God gives me life.”

In other words, food was meant to be a way of communion with God. Eating was supposed to be thanksgiving.

In Genesis, food was meant to lead human beings to God.

When we eat, we receive his creation as a gift from God and return it to him in gratitude.

*

But sin changed this. Instead of eating to live with God, human beings began to eat for themselves.

This is why the first sin in the Bible is about eating. Adam and Eve did not just eat fruit. They chose to eat without trusting God.

As we begin our new year, let us remember:

We were created to be dependent on food (not only on physical food but also on spiritual food).

We need to eat in order to grow physically and function properly with God, not without God. Food comes from God.

It tells us that our lives depend on God, who provides us food.

*

In the same way, we need to eat spiritual food, which is the Word of God.

That food also comes from God.

John 6:35, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

*

Let us give thanksgiving to God whenever we eat, whenever we read the Word of God, whenever we listen to his Word.
